Thanks but no.

  p              `builtin-zoom-previous` go to previous zoom in the zoom 
stack
  u              `builtin-unzoom`

I'm talking about the unzoomed (autoscaled) state being included in the 
zoom stack.
ie first plot would put "auto" onto the zoom stack as would reset; replot

eg

reset
set xr [1:50]
plot datafile w l
set auto; replot
set xr [1:10]; replot


then pressing p hotkey would take me to the unzoomed state not [1:50] as 
it currently does.
a second "p" would then take me to [1:50]

Although set auto is the "unzoomed" state it is a finite scaling option 
that has been viewed and likely explicitly set.

The special treatment of this scaling is disrouting and frequently 
rather inconvenient.
