Hmmm... if you're compiling your own gnuplot, why would you pick such an 
outdated version?

Should it, now?  How do you figure that column three of these two data 
records

> 2 00:02:14 00:02:00
> 3 00:02:01 2

would both parse successfully, with the same input specification?
