Following on from that....:

Also, as I'm coding a (LabVIEW) wrapper for gnuplot, it strikes me polar plots would have a flatter syntax, more closely related to X-Y plots, if there were "thetatics" and "mthetatics", such that "set grid polar" could follow similar syntax to XY plots, without the currently required exception of passing the radial tic spacing....

So instead of:
set grid polar 45

there [w|c]ould be:
set thetatics 45
set mthetatics 3
set rics 0,1,10
set mrtics 2
set grid polar thetatics mthetatics rtics nomrtics

-wordier, but flatter, and more flexible....?

I'm afraid, as a LabVIEW programmer, I'm in no position to submit a patch, just this feature suggestion/ request...
