I'm not seeing that:

[gnuplot]# make version.o
make: *** No rule to make target `version.o'.  Stop.

[gnuplot]# make -v
GNU Make 3.82
Built for x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu

When the build process is carried out, it must be using the version.c 
that exists in the repository instead of an updated version.c.  Now that 
I know what it is supposed to look like, I can investigate.
