   Hello list,

   Being frustrated for too long with the broken gnuplot that is included 
   in Ubuntu/Debian (still no GNU readline ...), I decided to compile it 

Elias, My installed version of gnuplot from the debian testing repo
has readline compiled in. I don't know about ubuntu, though.

Anyohw, have you tried using rlwrap? Emacs also has a nice gnuplot
mode.
