OK the problem was that I used tar.gz and NOT gz (gzip utility).
It is now fine.

It doesn't work for me. You can create a data file and paste

now these two commands generates different plots

gnuplot> plot "data.txt" using 1
gnuplot> plot "<zcat data.tar.gz" using 1

and 


gnuplot> plot "<zcat data.tar.gz" using 1:2
                                           ^
         x range is invalid

It's even easier than that.  
The pipe can be implicit in the plot command give to gnuplot:
   gnuplot>  plot "<zcat input.gz" using 1:2
