Hi,

try setting the font as well, e.g.:
set terminal jpeg font "Arial 10"

For me it works. No idea why or if it's general, but I have the same
version of gnuplot as you, so it might be worth trying it out. BTW,
you could consider using png instead, it's such a nicer format.
