Almost the same thing happens if I use csh: 

#!/usr/bin/env csh
//usr/local/tools/gnuplot-4.4.3/bin/gnuplot.real 

Very slight differences, but basically hitting control-C then fg in this case still derails gnuplot.  
My login shell is bash, so I suspect that's impacting things even when the script calls csh.
