Thanks, but that does not really work with epslatex ... the labels
seem to be dark grey instead of white

But in any case I thought that the background color would be limited
to the plotting area, not to all of the plot...

Is it possible to, say, for instance, draw a black square that covers
all of the plotting area and then replot over that?
