Thanks both Bernhard and Thomas,
this did exactly what I wanted to achieve - now without an additional file. 

And, yes, I had had been playing with set logscale t without success, as 
Bernhard readily pointed out.

Sometimes one just doesn't see the forest due to all those trees around ...

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
with constant spacing like courier! :-)
