Hi Thomas,
thank you very much for this information. IMHO a reference to  the 
"coordinates" syntax would be very helpful in the "label" documentation. 

It is not self-understanding to look for set coordinates when I am seeking for 
information about labels. An issue for the gnuplot-wish list (I guess it is 
unlimited like the Richter - scale  :-))

Secondly, wouldn't it make sense to make a consistent syntax? 

Using 
plot XYZ axis x1y2 ....

in plots in contrast to 
set label "LABEL" at first X, second Y

is again not self explanatory.

What regards the color specification I agree - just missing an idea how the 
reader could be pointed to looking for "set textcolor" based on the 
information provided by "help set label"; basically a similar issue as above. 
Maybe using capital letters for entries that are of composite type to indicate 
to search there? Just an idea ....

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
with constant spacing like courier! :-)
