Thanks for this.  But the problem with this method (if I have understood it correctly) is that I would then have to specify the start, frequency and end values myself for each graph.  Since I will be plotting a lot of graphs I was hoping for a way to have Gnuplot work these things out for me automatically, but simply omit labels (not so bothered about tics) between whole numbers.
