I have to add that I was having the problems about not being able to do line breaks only when using something like

splot 'file' u 1:2:3 w l title columnhead(1)

If instead I just set

set title "line 1\nline 2"

before, then it works.

But now I unfortunately ran into the next problem I was not able to solve: I use special characters and exponents, and then the two lines are too close to each other. Is there a way to increase the line spacing somehow? \n\n would be too much.
