Why would it have to mean anything?  The 'pm' in 'pm3d' also doesn't 
mean much of anything.  It's just the initials of its author.

Not really.  There's really not much "surface" in an splot 'with 
impulses' or 'with dots'.  Nor in a "set contour base" splot, for that 
matter.

Anyway, it's about 30 years too late to change that name.
