[Gnuplot-info] random-points

I'm trying to create graphs similar to those shown in the demo gallery 
cumulative smoothing. However, the example scripts given reference a 
file called random-points which is not supplied anywhere I can find. 
Without it, I can't be sure I'm using the examples correctly.

To work around the lack of that file, I've created a file with some 
random numbers in four columns. When I feed this file to the second, 
third, and fourth example scripts, I get something reasonably similar to 
the example graphs. But it doesn't seem to work for the first example. 
There, instead of the histogram, I get a number of horizontal straight 
lines the full width of the graph. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?

This is the gnuplot 4.4.0-5 RPM supplied with Fedora 14 (beta).
