Hi Jon,
this is another example assuming that you readily installed gnuplotps2pdf; 
just make it executable and start it, you'll get a picture of a parabola with 
optimized geometry for inclusion into pdflatex.

\includegraphics[scale=0.6]{parabel.pdf}

Hope this helps and clarifies some of the concepts I tried to tell you about - 
just look into the file, I hope this is self explanatory.

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
with constant spacing like courier! :-)
