I can think of no explanation for that.  It is mystifying.
So far as I know, the only difference in compiling gnuplot.exe and wgnuplot.exe
is the environmental variable WGP_CONSOLE.  Is that correct?
But I do not see any code in either parse.c and axis.c that depends on WGP_CONSOLE.

Do any of these work?
   set yrange [*<5    : 15<*]
   set yrange [*<(-5) :  5<*]
   N = -5;  set yrange [*<N : 5<*]

That is correct.  The new range syntax is only for 4.5.

But first let's see if anyone else has an idea what might be happening.
