[Gnuplot-info] background

I'm trying to set a background colour for my plot using the example in the
documentation with:

set object rectangle from screen 0,0 to screen 1,1 behind fc rgb 'black' fs
solid 1.0;

gnuplot version:
G N U P L O T
Version 4.5 patchlevel 0
last modified November 2009

my plot is a multiplot, but only the last plot is actually above the
rectangle. Any suggestions to rectify this situation?
