I upgraded from 42p0 to 4232 which caused the error:

]$ gnuplot
gnuplot: symbol lookup error: /lib/libreadline.so.5: undefined symbol: PC

This is probably due to a build error by the distributor (mandriva). I
installed an older version 42p4 and the table function now works.
