you need an actual version of gnuplot (>= 4.4)
1st you do a dummy plot (plot nothing) to set a variable
which is then used in the 2nd plot.

plot "datafilename" using 1:(f=$1 , 0/0) every ::0::0 notitle, "" using
1:(f*$2)
