[Gnuplot-info] math functions not working

Hello,
I am using gnuplot 
        G N U P L O T
        Version 4.4 patchlevel 0
        last modified March 2010
        System: MS-Windows 32 bit

When I try to use some of the math functions like log(50), none of them
work. it says invalid command.
I can make plots and stuff, but I can't access any of the math functions.
can someone help me?
