Hard to tell, because you didn't include information about:

1) which version of gnuplot you're talking about
2) compiled how ("show version long" output would help)
3) running on what kind and version of operating system

At least the "+GD_PNG" terminal of a current version of gnuplot, using a 
current version of libgd and libpng, is quite capable of producing lines 
of different widths.
