a complete script with automatic definition of x- and ytics (needs
3 dummy plots) would look like this:
reset
set macro
set term push
set term dumb
datafilename = 'your_datafilename'
datafilenamepipe = '< tail +2 '.datafilename.' | cut -d " " -f 2-'
# determine the numbers of rows and columns
splot datafilenamepipe matrix
nxtics = GPVAL_X_MAX-GPVAL_X_MIN
nytics = GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN
# define xtics (use 1st line only)
# to make gnuplot happy plot a linear function (using (i):(i))
xtics = "("
plot for [i=0:nxtics] \
datafilename \
using (i):(i>0?xtics=xtics.',':0 , \
xtics=xtics.' "'.stringcolumn(i+1).'" '.i , \
i) \
every ::0::0
xtics = xtics.' )'
set xtics @xtics
set xtics rotate by 90
sh xtics
# define ytics (start with 2nd line)
# to make gnuplot happy plot a linear function (using 2:($2))
ytics = "("
plot datafilename \
using 2:($0>0?ytics=ytics.',':0 , \
ytics=ytics.' "'.stringcolumn(1).'" '.sprintf("%d",$0) , \
$2) \
every ::1
ytics = ytics.' )'
set ytics @ytics
set ytics rotate by 90
sh ytics
set term pop
splot datafilenamepipe matrix with linespoints
