What was the terminal set to: "Unknown", by any chance?  What do you get for

	echo $DISPLAY

on both sides of the connection?

Probably not.  But your use of 'ssh -X' might be wrong.  Do _any_ other 
X11 clients (like 'xclock') work from inside that ssh -X session?
