What is the smallest file that shows this behavior?

For instance, if you have the file containing ONLY:

1
2
3

does it gobble up the 1 and the 3?

I wonder whether your problem is something weird
having to do w/ file formats - such as taking a file
from one platform and trying to read it on another.
