[Gnuplot-info] setting terminal.

Hi,
I am very new to GNU plot.i installed in gnuplot linux machine.
when i give command gnuplot,
it is showing
G N U P L O T
        Version 4.4 patchlevel 0-rc1
        last modified Sat Nov 28 14:34:01 PST 2009
        System: Linux 2.6.18-53.el5

Terminal type set to 'unknown'

Because of this i m not able to view plotted graph .i want to set it to
X11.how can i set  that terminal.can u help me in this aspect.
while i m trying to set terminal .it is giving error shown below.

               set terminal X11
                      ^
         unknown or ambiguous terminal type; type just 'set terminal' for a
list
