I > would rather not pay to use pdflib. If you would to creat pdf file, I recommend to use pdfcairo terminal (the cairo based terminal for pdf). It is free to use and the anti-alias cario based give a smooth graph. It requires recent cairo, pango, glib, and intl (freetype, fontconfig?) (linpng, this is required for pngcairo but not pdfcairo.
