[Gnuplot-info] Building from source with PDF functionality

I am attempting to build gnuplot from source so that I can include the PDF
libraries required to allow for the output terminal to be assigned to a .pdf
file and have a few questions:

Firstly, libpdf is mentioned frequently in documentation, however the
makefiles seem to require pdflib. Did gnuplot ever support libpdf and if so,
has that now been removed and replaced with pdflib?

If libpdf is not supported, is there an open source pdf library available? I
would rather not pay to use pdflib.
