This looks very promising.

The initial plot image is good.

However, when I do the replot with a table set, the X coordinates (date/time) 
do not seem to follow the rules in the doco.

I did:

set table "/tmp/pdata"
set xdata time
set timefmt "%Y-%m-%d_%H:%M:%S"
set format x "%s"
plot "/tmp/data" using 1:2 with lines
unset table

/tmp/pdata contains lines of the format:

""  5.489  i

If I omit the set format x, I get lines of the format:

"g"  5.489  i

How do I get the date/time x values output as seconds?
(GPVAL_X_MIN value implies that these are the units plotted.)
