Based on some of the comments regarding our 
suggested "stats" command, I think I need to 
clarify something.

There was a question whether the stats command
works on "a sample or a population". Neither!
It works on a a DATA FILE, like the rest of gnuplot.
(And therefore there is no ambiguity.)

Gnuplot knows nothing about sampling or statistical
methods - it is a plotting tool. And this command is
intended as an addition to gnuplot's plotting capabilities
by giving you some useful information about the file that 
you are plotting from.
