Aha, that explains it.  It seems odd to have the "official"
gnuplot site (well, the #1 google hit) be a mirror of the
"primary" site, with a lag of up to 24 hours.

On the gretl page that references gnuplot I've now switched the
URI to point to gnuplot.sourceforge.net.
