[Gnuplot-info] x2tics set by data series

I know that subject is confusing.  Here's what I'd like to do:

I have a three column file and I want to plot $1 on x1 axis, $2 on y1
axis and I want x2 axis to tell me what $3 is.  The problem is that $2
and $3 are not related by any simple function (ie not
linear/logarithmic).  Perhaps is there a simple way to make an x2 tic
for every 100th point and have that tic be the value of the third
column?
