[Gnuplot-info] drawing data over an sphere (r is not constant)

Hi everybody,

I'd like to know how I can draw data over an sphere with different r
(spherical coordinates) values for each point.

That is, in 2D I have this image

different values of Z for each longitude-latitude point which I can draw
using pm3d or points palette.

I would like to draw the earth (an sphere) and then to draw the data
over the sphere having as r=0 the surface of the sphere or the center.

In the figure linked abow I draw the earth orography from a file using
my own color palette. I would like to know if there is a better way of
displaying the "Earth" with gnuplot. I have thought about drawing the
surface over the sphere with, and then instead of drawing the orography
to use PovRay to apply a texture over the sphere.

Any suggestion is wellcomed. Thank you very much.
