try something like this:

set style line 1 linecolor rgb "red" linewidth 10
set arrow 1 from first "2008-07-28 15:00",graph 0.1 to first "2008-07-28
15:00",graph 0.9 nohead linestyle 1
set label 1 "important   " at first "2008-07-28 15:00",graph 0.8 right font
",30" textcolor rgb "red"

and don't forgat to replace the time string by the appropriate
one according to your timefmt specification.
