I think it's quite bad.  With the '=' operator in 'using' expressions, 
gnuplot shouldn't even have to be changed to compute that value.

And yes, the proposed syntax is abominable.  Yes, that's me speaking, 
who accepted the MAXITER=0 special case eleven years ago:-)
