gnuplot> help term png
is your friend.

however, it maybe that you get:
Sorry, no help for 'term png'
in which case you don't have png support compiled in.

gnuplot> help term
will list all the terminals avaliable to you, so if you don't have png
support you can choose a suitable alternative.
