global clean-up?

If cleaning up the code (e.g. removing 2,800 lines for Atari), this
may be the time to package the remaining global variables into some
appropriate gnuplot struct.  This would make it easy to link gnuplot
as a library into larger projects, allowing an arbitrary number of
plotting panels, say in dockable wxAUI frames.
