[Gnuplot-info] Controlling major tic marks when x axis is a date

I've got a "by day" graph, with the x axis as dates.  I'd like my major tic
marks to be weeks. 
I know how to control tic marks and turn on a grid, but the date part is
confusing me.  Hints?

set xdata time          # The x axis data is time
set timefmt "%Y-%m-%d"  # The dates in the file look like YYYY-MM-DD
set format x "%b %d"    # On the x-axis, we want tics like Jun 10
set grid
set terminal png small
#set terminal png small size 850,600
#set terminal dumb
plot '< tickertape_appsbyday.pl' using 1:2 with linespoints title 'Total
applications', "" using 1:3 with linespoints title 'Trial applications', ""
