So's just about everybody else.  Only Lars ever managed more than a 
single release.  As I said: this is what comes of releasing so seldom. 
We forget everything we learned by one release cycle before we do the 
next one.

Not really.  'make dist' is supposed to make a tarball, regardless of 
whether that's a release or snapshot.

Lars put some tricks into the toplevel Makefile.maint.  I think 'make -f 
Makefile.maint rel-check' is more like what we should consider updating.
