Dear listmembers,
I find two issues with gnuplot annoying since years and I would like to
suggest two patches I send along with this email.
1.) _if_ one runs "all.dem" (or any of the related demos) from a location
where the user cannot write, the demos fail. This is caused by logfiles being
written to the current location rather than to /tmp. I think it would _really_
make sense to ensure that unexperienced users may run the demos flawlessly
from whereever they are actually. The patch called gnuplot-4.3.0-demo.dif
along with this email cares for this issue.
2.) to access the locally installed demo a user is forced to know about
loadpath. This seems to me like putting the cart before the horse.
Consequently I added an option to define a default loadpath _not_ impacting
any other loadpath through the compile time define GNUPLOT_LIB_DEFAULT. So any
distributor may help his users by simply opening the path to running the demos
without forcing further knowledge about gnuplot. (gnuplot-4.3.0-
loadpathdefault.dif)
Use it or let it, but this is IMHO a more user friendly approach - especially
for people not being aware of the capabilities of gnuplot. Moreover one could
modify the startup message in such a way that the user is being pointed to the
pool of helpful examples residing on his local computer.
The patches go both against latest CVS
