OK, that means, if I want to have a colorful surface, I cannot use any
other (single) contour color than red. It would just help to highlight
some features of the surface, which are not completely visible.
Unfortunately, our admin did not yet update to 4.2.

I meant the tic labels. OK I have to deal then with it. set ticslevel
might help I guess.

Actually this is the answer (not "otherwise" but "in addition")!! I am
still using set pm3d and in the splot command lt <n1> ... Now I can
change the color of the contour line, whereas the grid on the surface is
specified by the set pm3d ... hidden3d lt <n2> command.
