The issue is not the missing file per se, it's that apparently Windows
considers this sufficiently severe to return an error code from the 
"dir" command.  It isn't a problem on unix/linux, where "ls" will
print a warning message but returns success.    So I imagine it would
be sufficient to wrap your "dir" command in a script MYDIR that always
returns success even if the real "dir" fails:

   FileList = system( "MYDIR Data".1."*.dat" )

You can't ignore "popen failed", you'll have to prevent it from failing.

well, I don't know awk or cygwin... but a little Perl...
Maybe someone can tell me whether awk, cygwin, ... is smaller, simpler,
faster to install and run... than Perl?
So, the following below seems to be a solution, although, I prefer not
to install Perl or anything else on every machine before I can run the
gnuplot code...
If someone still has a "gnuplot-only" version, please let me know.

During my search, I found a discussion from >10 years ago whether
gnuplot should have a function to check the existance of a file. But it
seems it was rejected.
Why can't gnuplot just give back an empty string instead of terminating?

thanks for your message.
Sorry, I didn't mention the Version number and OP-System: Win7Pro SP1.
I had gnuplot 5.0 patch 0, was installing 5.0.6 and finally also 5.2 rc2.
with
FileList = system("dir /B xxx*.dat")
and if no file "xxx.dat" is existing, I always get the message "popen
failed", gnuplot terminates and FileList is unchanged.
I don't see any different behaviour with the different gnuplot versions.
What I am doing wrong?

Hi Theo,

what version of gnuplot you are running?

With V5+ and windows 7Pro, I get error message "File not found",
GPVAL_ERRNO is set and gnuplot doesn't exit.

(Then you can decide if plot the graph according to value of
GPVAL_ERRNO or words(FileList))

(Note that since V5.2 gnuplot recognize continue command)

(The empty plot you can get, e.g.: #plot [0:1][0:1] 1/0 not)

There is no easy way to do that in gnuplot.

It depends which gnuplot version you are using.
This demo shows two different methods

The first method (top plot) can be used with older gnuplot versions.

The second method (bottom plot) is much easier but it requires version 5.2
which at the moment is only available as a release candidate.

I tried the command:
set palette model RGB functions 0.9, 0.9,0.95

it did not yield good result.


Secondly, I also desire to fill the area below the line in the 3D plot but don't know.

Anything in parenthesis is evaluated as an expression.
That expression can be a simple constant.

    splot  ...  using (3.0):1:3 with lines

If you want each indexed block to have a different x coordinate:

   splot for [i=1:n] 'omom.dat' index i using (i):1:3 w lines lc rgb word(colors,i)

We could understand the question better if you would point
to an example of the type of plot you are trying to create.

You say column 1 for x/y and column 3 for z, so perhaps you want

   splot 'data' using 1:1:3 with lines

I have a mini script that provides the frame of the 3D plot. I just need to insert the 2D data in the 3D frame.

[Gnuplot-info] A couple questions: using parameters and stacking plots

If I've got a bunch of csv files like iqd_1.dat, iqd_2.dat, iqd_3.dat
and I'd like to plot them to iqd_1.gif, iqd_2.gif, iqd_3.gif is there
a shortcut other than making a bunch of individual plot files?  I read
somewhere that until version 5 you could use $1 as a file name like in
unix scripts, it seems like something must have replaced that.  I
could write a for loop in Bash to plot the whole batch except I don't
know how to plug the names into Gnuplot, both as input files and as
image files.  $1.csv and $1.gif would be good.

There's probably a way to do this but I'm not sure what it's called,
where you've got many similar data files you want all on the same plot
with each one displaced vertically by say 10 pixels.  Some partly
obscure others, that's OK.  Does Gnuplot do that?

I recently saw a really neat demo as part of an rtl_power_fftw package
where data comes from somewhere, goes though rtl_power_fftw, gets fed
to gnuplot, and updates a plot on the screen a couple times a second.
Can't find it right now but it was feeding gnuplot's stdin.

The x and y coordinates from the most recent mouse click are in
 MOUSE_X and MOUSE_Y.

Following your idea, after a pause -1 (pause mouse key)
Clicking on the 2nd button of the mouse, I can display the values (x, y) 
that I clicked.
How can I transfer these values to gnuplot when I make a return in the
terminal where gnuplot is waiting ?
Then I will affect the read value to the rest of my gnuplot script.

If you mean the last version 5.0.6,
as I wrote you could attach patch using a text editor if you carefully read the patch file and tabulate.rej.

However, I rearranged the patch and attached this mail.

BTW, as I wrote previously,
please try Karl Ratzsch's reply in

set table;set samp 10
plot "+" using 1:(sin($1)):(0.1):(sin($1)*0.2) with table

The above works without patch and it is what you want, I think.
