After more experimentation I find that there is indeed a bug triggered by
the combination of "noautoscale" and data points that receive a
categorization "UNDEFINED".  It is not specific to plot style "fillsteps"
but it may explain the unexpected fill areas in your test case.

I am not sure I understand the question, but I'll try to add some
information that might help.

The default range on both x and y is [-10:10].
If you do not specify a different range and you do not use autoscaling,
then that's what you get.

Normally the presence of blank lines in a data file indicates
separate data sets that will be selected using the "index" keyword.
I am not certain whether the presence of blank lines in a data block
works identically to those in a file.  I think there were some relevant
patches recently but I did not pay much attention to them.
In any case your plot commands do not include any "index" keyword
so the intent in unclear.

If I fill in the first column of data "7\n8\n9\n ..." but leave the
second column blank then I get a plot which may be more like you
were expecting except that the lower left plot has fill areas 
extending below zero.  I can't immediately explain why the fill area
goes negative, but also I think the documentation for "help fillsteps"
is not entirely clear on what to expect in this case.

Does that clarify anything?

ok, I haven't thought of boxes... probably the easiest workaround.
One way is certainly plotting boxes to +BIGNUM and -BIGNUM if you know for sure your data will be below this value.
The modified script below uses "replot" and GPVAL_Y_MAX and GPVAL_Y_MIN and works without BIGNUM. It also accounts for the fact that $Data column1 might also consist of other x-steps than 1.
However, when $Data column2 is 0="off" there is still be a hardly visible line at y=0. Actually, if I draw a box with height 0 I would expect to see absolutely nothing.
Well, this line you can avoid by changing the color to background using the ternary operator, as you did.

My take is
   set linetype 101 lc bgnd
   set linetype 102 lc "seagreen"
   set boxwidth 1.0
   set yrange [0:*]
   BIGNUM = 1.e5

   plot $Data using ($1+0.5):(BIGNUM):($2==0?101:102) with boxes lc var noautoscale, \
        whatever-the-foreground-plot-is

If ymin < 0 you would have to tweak this a bit.
Maybe draw the boxes twice, once with +BIGNUM once with -BIGNUM.
Or use boxxy, but that requires a more complicated using spec.

[Gnuplot-info] Background depending on data

Hello,
I am trying to create a plot with background color depending on a datafile. The datafile basically just contains 0s and 1s for "off" and "on". When it is "on" the background should be e.g. a light green and should span the whole y-range of the plot.
I tried with fillstep and calculate the ymin and ymax using the 0s and 1s from the data file and GPVAL_Y_MIN and GPVAL_Y_MAX. That's why I apparently have to use "replot" to get the actual (autoscaled) values.
The script below seem to work in general but for some strange reason not always. Sometimes the GPVAL_Y_MIN and GPVAL_Y_MAX values do not correspond to the y-axis minimum and maximum.
Furthermore, the fillstep fills always to 0, not from ymin to ymax.
Maybe I am just thinking too complicated and there is a function to do this much simpler?
Any ideas? Thank you.

The really weird thing is that it is specifically 1/0 that 
breaks something.  Using  NaN or 0 does not trigger this issue.
So if you want to keep the line, substitute NaN for 1/0

I do not understand the root cause of the problem, but I can 
give you an easy fix for your script.

The badness all comes from inclusion of that final line:

plot
  ...
   1/0 lt -1 notitle           # Dummy so I can move above around


If you delete that line, it works.

I understand why you had that line there, but it has not been needed
for a very long time.  Since at least version 4.6 you can end a 
plot command with a comma and at worst you will get a warning message.

Why does including an all-undefine plot cause the logscale
to fail? Good question.  I'll look into it.  But meanwhile you
should be able to get your log output again.

sorry, actually, I didn't mention that the code and path was created by Python and sent via pipe to gnuplot.
So, I guess using an additional line explicitely setting utf8 encoding was probably the "trick".
Standard encoding apparently was cp1252.

unix/linux filesystems store file names without making any attempt
to interpret or enforce a specific character encoding. On a linux
ext4 filesystem it would be possible to have some filenames in 
UTF8 and others in ISO_8859_5 or whatever.  

But that is not true on Windows or OSX.  On those systems the
usual filesystems only accept or permit a certain character
encoding as a legal file name.  In neither case is UTF8 one of the
legal encodings.

So if your file is located physically on a Windows machine
it is highly likely that the file names are not UTF8. 

When built for windows (at least for some build environments)
gnuplot opens files using a special routine win_fopen() that converts
UTF8 names to some other encoding before trying to open it.
I must leave the details to someone more familiar with that code.
Even so I think there is no guarantee that the encoding chosen
by the win_fopen() routine matches the encoding enforced by the
disk that the file lives on.

Stick with linux file systems?
Although even there I think you would have to work around the
program trying to use win_fopen() rather than a standard
fopen() that just takes the filename as-is.

[Gnuplot-info] Japanese/Chinese characters in UNC network path

Hi,
I am trying to plot a data file under Windows which is located on a network path containing Japanese or Chinese characters.
A command like the following doesn't seem to work:
XXX stands for some Japanese or Chinese characters.

plot '//server/blabla/XXX/blabla/XXX/datafile.dat' u 1:2

I thought gnuplot does understand UTF8...?
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas, what I could do? Thanks.

I personally do not recomend to do integral calculation using gnuplot though you can do it with a tricky technique.

I recommend to use mathamatical softwares,
Python+SciPy, GNU Octave, Scilab and so on because they have sofisticated mathamatical tools that gnuplot never has.

Gnuplot is in princple a very nice plotting software but not a mathamatical software, I think.

I Implemented the integration routine proposed on

Here I need pass the variable into the function to integrate (I can do it),
but how do I initial the integration over the additional variable t?

Yes. But in gnuplot's notation that would be.
f1(x) = ...
f2(x) = ...
f11(x) = ...
f22(x) = ...

f(x) = g1(x) * g2(x)

first call:
g1(x) = f1(x); g2(x) = f2(x);
f(x)
second call:
g1(x) = f11(x); g2(x) = f22(x);
f(x)

That is the same as you showed except that you have to
use the names g1 g2 in the original definition as placeholders.

Sure. That's what you were doing anyway, whether you knew it or not.
f1(x) = expression_A
f2(x) = expression_B
g(x) = f1(x) * f2(x)

The function g(x) is not expanded to (expression_A*expression_B) at the time
you define it.  It is defined in terms of calls to two other named
functions.
When you evaluate g(x) at some future time, it will look up the definitions
of f1 and f2 _at that future time_ in order to perform the evaluation.
So in another notational system (not gnuplot's) you might write that same
definition of g as
    g(f1,f2,x) = f1(x) * f2(x)
to make it clearer that f1 and f2 may change between invocations of g().

I'm not sure, what you wanna do.

Why you not to input the first desired command in the interactive
session manually then?

If you wanna make sure that the command is always run, than you can
end the gnuplot ini-file (see "Start-up (initialization)" gnuplot
manual section) up with it.

then, after a return, the application goes until the end.
How, after a pause, I could get the control on gunplot, i.e. by
running some gnuplot commands ? (by leaving the background mode)?
