After more experimentation I find that there is indeed a bug triggered by the combination of "noautoscale" and data points that receive a categorization "UNDEFINED". It is not specific to plot style "fillsteps" but it may explain the unexpected fill areas in your test case. ok, I haven't thought of boxes... probably the easiest workaround.
One way is certainly plotting boxes to +BIGNUM and -BIGNUM if you know for sure your data will be below this value.
The modified script below uses "replot" and GPVAL_Y_MAX and GPVAL_Y_MIN and works without BIGNUM. It also accounts for the fact that $Data column1 might also consist of other x-steps than 1.
However, when $Data column2 is 0="off" there is still be a hardly visible line at y=0. Actually, if I draw a box with height 0 I would expect to see absolutely nothing.
Well, this line you can avoid by changing the color to background using the ternary operator, as you did.

My take is

If ymin < 0 you would have to tweak this a bit.
Maybe draw the boxes twice, once with +BIGNUM once with -BIGNUM.
Or use boxxy, but that requires a more complicated using spec.

Hello,

Maybe I am just thinking too complicated and there is a function to do this much simpler?

I do not understand the root cause of the problem, but I can give you an easy fix for your script. The badness all comes from inclusion of that final line: plot ... 1/0 lt -1 notitle # Dummy so I can move above around If you delete that line, it works. I understand why you had that line there, but it has not been needed for a very long time. Since at least version 4.6 you can end a plot command with a comma and at worst you will get a warning message. Why does including an all-undefine plot cause the logscale to fail? Good question. I'll look into it. But meanwhile you should be able to get your log output again. Thanks Ethan, sorry, actually, I didn't mention that the code and path was created by Python and sent via pipe to gnuplot. So, I guess using an additional line explicitely setting utf8 encoding was probably the "trick". Standard encoding apparently was cp1252. set encoding utf8 plot '//server/blabla/XXX/blabla/XXX/datafile.dat' u 1:2 |

On a linux ext4 filesystem it would be possible to have some filenames in UTF8 and others in ISO_8859_5 or whatever. But that is not true on Windows or OSX. On those systems the usual filesystems only accept or permit a certain character encoding as a legal file name. In neither case is UTF8 one of the legal encodings. So if your file is located physically on a Windows machine it is highly likely that the file names are not UTF8. When built for windows (at least for some build environments) gnuplot opens files using a special routine win_fopen() that converts UTF8 names to some other encoding before trying to open it. I must leave the details to someone more familiar with that code. Even so I think there is no guarantee that the encoding chosen by the win_fopen() routine matches the encoding enforced by the disk that the file lives on. > What am I doing wrong? I recommend to use mathamatical softwares, Python+SciPy, GNU Octave, Scilab and so on because they have sofisticated mathamatical tools that gnuplot never has. Sure. That's what you were doing anyway, whether you knew it or not.
f1(x) = expression_A
f2(x) = expression_B
g(x) = f1(x) * f2(x)
The function g(x) is not expanded to (expression_A*expression_B) at the time
you define it. It is defined in terms of calls to two other named
functions.
When you evaluate g(x) at some future time, it will look up the definitions
of f1 and f2 _at that future time_ in order to perform the evaluation.
So in another notational system (not gnuplot's) you might write that same
definition of g as
g(f1,f2,x) = f1(x) * f2(x)
to make it clearer that f1 and f2 may change between invocations of g().

Hi Patrick, I'm not sure, what you wanna do. Why you not to input the first desired command in the interactive session manually then? If you wanna make sure that the command is always run, than you can end the gnuplot ini-file (see "Start-up (initialization)" gnuplot manual section) up with it.
