[Gnuplot-info] Clustered histogram from second datablock

Hi

I'm making several plots (clustered histograms) when I use data from the
first datablock. Everything is correct.
when I use data from the second datablock (every :::1::1) the bars are not
aligned correct on the x-axis. The correct bars are not above their correct
label. Everything is translated to the right. And some bars are even outside
the graph.

This is the code I use:
  set title "Total Execution time"
  set decimalsign locale
  set boxwidth 0.9 relative
  set style data histograms
  set style histogram cluster
  set style fill solid 1.0 border lt -1
  set grid
  set ylabel "Time (s)"
  set xlabel "CPU Clockfrequency (GHz)"
  plot 'totalcpufreq.dat' every :::1::1 using 2:xticlabels(1) title "4
threads", '' every :::1::1 using 3 title "8 threads"

This is the data-file:

This is a workaround that doesn't work in some cases, like when the
upper border should instead be transparent, as it would be in some
other terminals. Is there a solution for that?

the 'system' command returns a string which used as the first argument in
a plot command will be interpreted as a filename - that's the way gnuplot
is instructed to read data from a file.
just tell gnuplot that 'GewMW' doesn't contain a filename but a numerical
value:
plot 1.*GewMW

How can i convert in gnuplot strings to double?

I use AWK for calculating in a data file some weighted means. The result
should be displayed in gnuplot.

print GewMW

print GewMW shows the correct result but AWK or Gnuplot convert here the
result to a string: "GewMW = system(..)"  which is saved in GewMW.
This string i cannot process with plot..

.. shows only the first mean but not the weighted mean from the value GewMW

i've also written a small  C++ Programm "stringToDouble(.. string )" which

Thanks for the tip. I saved the data file and copied/pasted in the script.  I
did get a graph with no data plotted but the axes (x,y) labeled. 
Unfortunately, I believe I am too "new" and much of the scripting makes no
sense to me, yet.  At this point I bet my solution will be to plot my data
as shown in the original post and take a screen shot of it.  I also have to
rotate 0 to point up in the 90 direction and flip the graph (swap 270-90) to
have it make more sense for my application (machine coordinate orientation),
then add in labels using the image editing software. Not quite as elegant
but should do until I learn more.  Thanks again.

[Gnuplot-info] "textcolor" command not working in script

I have recently changed my operating system from Ubuntu 11.04 to Kubuntu
10.04 LTS. On both systems I installed Gnuplot from the Synaptic package
manager but now I find that scripts that worked on Ubuntu now fail on
Kubuntu. Specifically the line that fails is 

set key bottom left horizontal spacing 0.5 width -1 samplen 1 textcolor rgb
"#FFFFFF"

with the error message

undefined variable: textcolor

I am now running Gnuplot Version 4.2 patchlevel 6 on an AMD64 machine, Linux
2.6.32-34-generic. Can anyone suggest what the problem is? Is it that I have
reverted to an older system/Synaptic version of Gnuplot on which the
"textcolor" command is not supported? If this is the case, I presume I will
have to manually compile the most recent version of Gnuplot, or is there a
simple rewrite of the script that will do the job?

I do not know these zonotopes/zonohedrons
but there is a "glass.dem" at http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_4.4/surface1.html
last entry is a mandelbrot. Since you can calculate the edges it
should be possible.

I would like to draw zonotopes/zonohedrons:

starting from generators (vectors containing data) and - 
if possible -
also to compute the volume. I was wondering if with 
gnuplot it is
possible to draw this 3-D object plotting actual data. I 
did look in
the gallery of the demo but could not find anything close 
to it.

Any ideas or suggestions?

If gnuplot is not the way to go (I really hope it is the 
way, though!!)
can you suggest some alternatives?

I know for sure it is possible to draw such objects and 
also compute
their volume (which would also be useful) with 
Mathematica, but I don't
have such software and would rather prefer open source 
packages.

no clue what language or what the data may look like.

[Gnuplot-info] need help with heatmap

hi List,
i use gnuplot sporadicly but since many years.

The problem i have now left me a bit confused.
I have a matrix with z-only values.

i do (short).

set view map
splot "data" matrix with image

that works fine. (note: NxM matrix)

The problems starts when i want a "3d-view", mesh, surface plot what ever.

any hints ?

note: i use gnuplot 4.2.3

The difference in machines and OS versions is almost 100% certainly a 
red herring.  The real problem is bound to lie in the versions of 
underlying libraries your self-built version uses.

Unfortunately, none of those attachments made it to the mailing list. 
Configure.out in particular would have been absolutely crucial to see. 
Without it all I can offer is a guess: look at the startup-screen of 
your respective gnuplot binaries: what do they report as the terminal 
driver?  The output of "show version long" would be almost equally 
informative.

By having different terminals compiled in and used, for one thing.

a) use the 'reread' command to execute a plot command file for each data
file.
    works nicely if the data file names are consecutively numbered.
    see 'help reread'

b) with the development version of gnuplot you may use the 'do for' loop.

c) use a shell script, batch file, or whatever your operating system
    provides to call gnuplot for each data file.

[Gnuplot-info] set xtics rotate by -45 works on one 4.2.6 but not on another

Hi,

I have two machines. One Ubuntu 10.04 with gnuplot installed via apt-get 
(4.2.6 version). One Ubuntu 8.04 with 4.2.6 compiled from source 
(standard on ubuntu 8.04 is 4.2.2 but I want to have same version on 
both to avoid problems).

I'm using:

set xtics rotate by -45

On my Ubuntu 10.04 it works fine, but on the 8.04 the rotation is done 
90 degrees instead of -45 and the text ends up behind the graph.

Attached I have:

ubuntu804.plot, ubuntu804.data, ubuntu804.png (output), 
ubuntu804.configure.out, ubuntu804.make_install.out : these files should 
be clear that they are from the 8.04 machine. The configure and make 
output is included for how I compiled gnuplot 4.2.6 on that machine.

ubuntu1004.plot, ubuntu1004.png : I use the same input as for the 8.04.

Can someone explain how the same gnuplot version can output different 
plots? Am I missing something to enable when I configure gnuplot to get 
this "set xtics rotate by -45" to work?

I put several plots into a single batch file, now I just need to plot the
first one, and then stops (to render the plot but not quit gnuplot). Can I
possibly do that or I have to split the script into several separate scripts
with each plots a single plot.
