Hi, an idea just sprung out of the assign() discussion but I'll split it her= e = so as not to mix the two. I've long found the most cumbersome and unreadable lines in my gnuplot = files are plot commands. These can get very long , split over several lines since there is quite = a = lot of definitions to get in there and they become pretty hard to scan, = = especially if using the abreviated forms. a separate idea for cleaning up 'using' clauses and making the whole thi= ng = more readable would be 'using macros'. One could define a set of 'using'= = parameters and reference them with a macro-like structure. eg. A=3D'with lines color rgb gold linestye dotted smooth acspline'; = # = (E&OE) plot 1:2: using use_sytle(A) t 'line one'; This would be nice and easy to code. The definition is a simple variable= = which gets subsituted as the plot command is parsed, the string is = inserted at the current position and the rest of the parse continues fro= m = where it stopped. I want to use 3 attributes from this data file which is protocol,
Bytes, Packets. It will be show like
Which protocol how many amount of bytes are sending? like TCP 3240
(total bytes)
UDP 1520 (Total bytes)
qnx 540 (Total bytes)
ICMP1203
(Total bytes) etc.
As a new user, I don't have much idea which graph i can apply for this
data so if anybody can help me out with this problem.

Thank you for your reply and explanation that
1) gnuplot 4.2 specifies that the keyword 'offset' should be included
with the timestamp offset parameters, and that
2) I should use the version 4.2 manual with gnuplot 4.2 .
I have now downloaded that manual from http://www.gnuplot.info/:

I have tried using the set command you suggest:
set timestamp rotate offset ,4 (5)
This command fits the command syntax specified on page 128, sec. 43.67
"Timestamp" in the above referenced manual:
set timestamp ... {rotate} {offset {<xoff>} {,<yoff>}} . (6)
BUG REPORT
But when I use your command with the 'offset' keyword, I still
get the error message

."plotorb", line 4: invalid expression
just like before. This occurs using
. GNUPLOT Version 4.2 patchlevel 0
. last modified March 2007
. System: Linux 2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
[Changing to 'set timestamp rotate offset 0,4' cures the problem.]
CONCLUSION
The above reported timestamp error is either
a) a bug in gnuplot 4.2 or
b) a typo in the version 4.2 manual, p.128, sec. 43.67 "Timestamp".
The syntax should read
set timestamp ... {offset {<xoff>{,<yoff>}}} (7)
This syntax is slightly different from the syntax expression (6) above.

You don't appear to actually running the histogram demo. There's no
command like this in any of the demo files. Nor would "running the
demo" have interactive "gnuplot> " prompts.

It doesn't make terribly much sense to combine an explicit "set xtics"
list with the "xticlabels" option of the "plot" command.

executable. The most likely reason for this is that whoever built that
4.2 binary you're using explicitly disabled the histograms compile-time

I am new at bug reports; please advise if this should be reported

'SET TIMESTAMP ERROR'
SUMMARY
In giving the gnuplot command
set timestamp rotate -1,4 (1)
it is necessary to give the xoff value (here -1) if yoff (here 4) is
given. Using
set timestamp rotate ,4 (2)
(which assumes the default xoff=0) may give an error message.
The error message (with plot termination) occurs for gnuplot 4.2 .
But gnuplot 4.0 accepts command (2) and gives the expected plot
result.
DISCUSSION
The timestamp error I report here is either
a) a bug in gnuplot 4.2 or
b) a typo in the gnuplot manual:

a hidden file .gnuplot . When I call gnuplot through the command line,
I get the error message

I see no sense in talking of mean this should be coded 7*366+23*365 : the correct precise integer value. this agrees with: $ date --date='2000-01-01 00:00:00 UTC' +'%s' 946684800 Any use of this "average" concept should be removed from gnuplot.
