You neglect to tell us what *kind* of output.

But let me guess - you are creating a PostScript or *.eps file,
right?  The common PostScript viewers (ghostview, gv) have a
bug that does not draw pattern-filled areas unless you turn
off anti-aliasing in the Options menu.  It should come out fine
on an actual printer, however.

If I have guessed wrong, well - you need to provide more information.

 This is just one more place that gets forgotten when e.g. new terminals are
 added. Just like them not being added in Makefiles (which I usually check

Hi !

I have "plot-file" where I have gnuplot commands example:

set terminal png
set output "output.png"
set title "My first graph"
set xrange[-100:100]
etc...


I get some of parameters (like xrange) from another place (program sets the
xrange values)
And now I would like to separate this "plot-file".

I would like to have two files. File1 contains titles, (set grid), (plot),
etc.. And one file2 contains all parameters what it gets from another place.

So is this possible? Can I somehow do like this:

File 1
set terminal png
set output "output.png"
set title "My first graph"
read xrange from file2 ??


File 2 

set xrange[-100:100]
etc..



Another question:

I have plot-file which draws filledcurves. It works fine when the picture
comes to screen, but if I try to make
output then the picture is ok, but there aren't any filledcurves ?

But you should not need the ./prepare stage in order to build from
the -rc candidate tarball, just as you will not need it to build 
from the final release.   The release source contains a 
pre-built  ./configure script.

Hi,

In order to install in Ubuntu I had to manually install automake. I  
now run:
automake (GNU automake) 1.9.6

My problem was that the ./prepare stage wasn't creating the make file.

No, you don't.

No, there isn't. Pango is needed, it's a direct dependency for the wxt=20
terminal. However you can build it without freetype and without fontconfi=
g.

Timoth=E9e,

I went back and removed fontconfig, freetype, pango, and atk. I got
cairo-1.2.4 to build and install successfully with

  ./configure --enable-atsui --enable-quartz --enable-freetype=3Dno
--enable-xlib=3Dno

Question: Do I need xlib for wxt on a Mac?

I then went back and rebuilt and reinstalled wxMac-2.6.3 in case it was
dependent on cairo for headers, libraries, etc.

Then I attempted a rebuild of gnuplot-4.2.rc1. The ./configure is still
looking for pango:

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you can avoid the need to call pkg-config if you set the
environment variables CAIROPANGO_CFLAGS and CAIROPANGO_LIBS to the
corresponding flags for cairo, pango, and pangocairo.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

still build a wxt terminal?

The apparent pango dependency is what led me down the primrose path to
fontconfig, freetype, etc., on my last build attempt. Maybe the make file
needs some changes for the Mac?

Could you explain your objections, please?
To me, the entire autoconfigure system is nightmare-ish.
This particular addition to the script seems relatively straightforward
and informative.  

It is true that when changing a configuration option one must also change
the associated summary message, but that strikes me as a reasonable price.

"Bundling" is probably the right solution.
Alternatively, you can try the attached patch that is documented=20

Wait a bit for version 4.2 (or get the release candidate now), and try 
its new features.  One of them is plotting to string-labelled axes.

Can you tell me if you "bundled" gnuplot ? On Mac, it seems to be=20
important for GUI applications that are started from the command line.=20
If you didn't, can you try to do that ? Anyway, I'll give you a patch to=20
try later today or tomorrow that may overcome that particular problem.

I had thought it gave an example of redefining all these codes based
on the encoding, but on closer inspection I now see that the example
pertains specifically to "entity references" in distinction to
"character references".

Indeed.  It is further complicated by the fact that the & character
is used in gnuplot's enhanced text mark-up.  That isn't an issue
for TeX, but it is for SVG.

What you call octal/hex constants, XML calls a "character reference".=

And the paragraph of the XML spec the URL above points says quite=

straightforwardly that such references specify a Unicode code point.

I understand. The specific question remains as to whether the XML tag
"encoding=3D'foo'" at the head of a document is mandated to apply
or not apply to octal/hex constants.  We observe that it doesn't,
but do not know whether this is expected behaviour or a faulty
implementation in the browser plugins.

OK.  Then I will commit the simpler of the 2 test versions,
with no special handling of UTF-8.  It maintains the & and <
treatment you describe for both normal and enhanced text. =20

We may need a provision to allow people to pass a Unicode sequence
as a hex code rather than as raw UTF-8 bytes:
	set title "This is a Unicode right arrow: &#x21d2 "
In this case you don't want that & character replaced by &amp;

I predict many queries in the future about setting up UTF-8 fonts
correctly, but font queries seem inevitable in any case.

That limit has nothing to do with the presence or absence of snprintf.

That's one place, one that actually has a comment noting the problem.
But there are other places as well.

The suggestion in TODO is to find one with a compatible license.
I did a bit of poking around on the web and found one with a BSD
license and reference to one with an Apache implementation.
But I have neither time nor inclination to deal with evaluation
of licensing issues if we were to include these as source. 

The current code does the right thing on any system modern enough
to provide snprintf.  I think it is sufficient to give a warning
when gnuplot is built on a legacy system that doesn't.

The versions I found ran to hundreds of lines of code.

I guess implementing the sprintf or snprintf really isn't the critical issue.  All we need do is ensure there is enough space, and searching for field width in the format string between two percent signs (%'s) shouldn't be too difficult.  Why don't we try to fix the problem using just the sprintf() rather than worry about warning messages?
