Yes, that fixes it. But there's still something a little odd here.
After full updating (CVS, prepare and configure) I have

(a) in src/Makefile:
# Location of X11 app defaults
XAPPLRESDIR = /etc/X11/app-defaults/

(b) in share/Makefile:
appdefaultdir = $(pkgdatadir)/$(VERSION_MAJOR)/app-defaults
...
X11_APPDEFAULTS_DIR = /etc/X11/app-defaults/

"make install" in share uses the pkgdatadir path, not the one
found for X11_APPDEFAULTS_DIR, although it's the latter that gets
compiled into the program.

4.5 -- and sorry, it was my bad, I hadn't updated Makefile.in.
After doing that the default was picked up and the error was
not triggered.

Ugh. You're right. 
Fortunately it's not too late to fix this in the 4.4.0 source.

But how did you trigger this?
So far as I can see, XAPPLRESDIR is defined in the Makefile regardless
of whether its value is NULL.
Are you looking at 4.4 or 4.5?
.../src/Makefile should have a line like this:

AM_CPPFLAGS = -I../term -I$(top_srcdir)/term -DBINDIR=\"$(bindir)\" -DX11_DRIVER_DIR=\"$(X11_DRIVER_DIR)\" -DGNUPLOT_PS_DIR=\"$(GNUPLOT_PS_DIR)\" -DGNUPLOT_JS_DIR=\"$(GNUPLOT_JS_DIR)\" -DGNUPLOT_LUA_DIR=\"$(GNUPLOT_LUA_DIR)\"  -DCONTACT=\"$(EMAIL)\" -DHELPFILE=\"$(HELPFILE)\" -DGNUPLOT_X11=\"$(GNUPLOT_X11)\" -DXAPPLRESDIR=\"$(XAPPLRESDIR)\"

and those flags should be passed to the compiler when gnuplot_x11 is built.

The intent was   *buffer = '\0'

Fixing the code is easy, but I'm kind of uneasy that the build process
may have broken somehow so that is can lose the definition of XAPPLRESDIR.

4.4.3:

gplt_x11.c: In function 'preset':
gplt_x11.c:5025: error: incompatible types when assigning to type
'char[256]' from type 'void *'

The offending line is

  buffer = NULL;

'buffer' having been previously declared as of type char[256].

The bad line is reached if XAPPLRESDIR is defined neither in the
environment nor in the gnuplot source itself, I think.

I'd try for a patch but I don't quite understand the logic in that
part of the code.

I don't think this needs documentation.

Somebody in very past decided to put these options into the local menu 
instead of items in the menu bar. It should be a general knowledge to press 
the other mouse button to get local menu except for in a Mac environment. 

Should we move the local menu into the main menu bar because user skills are 
lower nowadays? Then the same should be done in the windows graph window 
where there is also local menu :-)

But if it is really FAQ, then it should go to FAQ.

Font setting of the command window of wgnuplot(_pipes).exe sometimes 
looks bad depending on the windows system.
In the case, correct it in the following
 1. Click the icon on the bar of the command window, and pull the menu.
 2. Execute 'Options' -> 'Choose Font' and select proper font for your system
 3. Execute 'Options' -> 'Update ...\wgnuplot.ini' to save the setting

I do not have strong opinion the above is to be documented.

Yes, it is current: 5 March 2010
 
Following the release we will have to update all the web pages to say
that 4.4 is "current" and 4.2 is "previous".

Don't worry about the pdf file. It is the same for all platforms, and I
will upload a current one at the same time as the set of binaries and
sources.

Sorry, it requires make process. So contents in demo/html/ have no meaning for binary distribution.
Please also remove demo/html/ from gp440dj2.zip.

use. I've checked that "make" nor "webify" cannot work in the binary 
distribution (i.e. without full gnuplot sources) so it makes no sense to 
distribute this directory. I don't think there is anything useful for a 
user, right?

Ethan, please remove directory demo/html/ from gp440win32.zip.

The phenomenon you have met sometimes happens on wgnuplot. Please use 'right click of mouse button' in
the command window and pull the pull down menu. Go to choose font and select appropriate font in your
system.  After that please execute  'Update ( path depend on system )\wgnuplot.ini' to save font
setting.

I obey the Petr's decision that gnuplot for windows distribution includes wxt terminal.
So please remove the below from Readme.windows.

Yes (let's don't let Windows users "patch" distribution).

Yes, I did "unix2dos" for CR/LF, removed temporary exe from docs, and some 
other minor things, so that all what was in gp42*.zip is also in gp440*.zip.

I don't think it makes any sense or advantage. There are already 
wgnuplot.exe, wgnuplot_pipes.exe, pgnuplot.exe and gnuplot.exe in one zip, 
i.e. enough for user confusion.

User gets the traditional windows terminal by "GNUTERM=windows", if needed.
As on Linux, where this switch happened a year ago from x11 to wxt.

For nostalgy, it could make sense to have a package with the static 
monolithic single file wgnuplot.exe as I was distributing it until now. 
(Would somebody need it? E.g. gp440win32small.zip?)
