I haven't heard about the problem, yet. You can inspect the key file with the pilot-* tools: Fetch the database from the palm with pilot-xfer -f Keys-Gtkr And then dump it with "pilot-file -v Keys-Gtkr.pdb" The records (except record 0) should look like this: entries index size attrs cat uid [...] 10 40 0x40 5 0xd96014 0000: 4b 65 79 72 69 6e 67 00 68 de 34 7a 54 f8 9a 22 Keyring.h^4zTx." 0010: 3a ac da a5 19 ae 03 a7 16 55 cf 2c 26 9e a2 92 :,Z%...'.UO,&.". 0020: e3 6f 9c e8 d3 31 5b 80 co.hS.[. ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Addr. Hex Dump Ascii text The Ascii text should start with the clear text name, followed by a single NUL byte (depicted as "."). After that comes the encrypted password data, it should consist of a multiple of 8 characters. In this case the name is "Keyring", followed by NUL byte, followed by 32 bytes of crypted data (which is a multiple of 8). The record you have problems with probably has some extra characters after the crypted data. Jochen -- Jochen Hoenicke -- ICQ: 101057678 |

Dear all, being a fascinated user of gnukeyring, I have been experiencing the problem mentioned in the subject field since I upgraded my Palm Vx to Palm OS 3.5.3. I use a German version of PalmOS. There is one possible source for the error: I use the gnukeyring plugin of jpilot for data handling on the Linux PC. Maybe this software there creates the mis-padded block. Has anyone had the same problem and could fix it? Or does know where I could start looking for further information. Thanks for any help! Joined this list wishing I'd find a way to export the entire database to text (if my Palm breaks, I need a readable backup). Amazing: my very first received message happened to be exactly about that! Stefan,
Thank you for the addition of the export function; it makes the viewer a
very useful tool for me.
A few things that I noticed:
1) The last record of my database (at least the last alphabetically) was
listed three times but only the bottom one showed any content in the
details box to the right. It is possible that the blank ones were records
I had previously deleted, I'm not sure. Interestingly, the record was
shown only once in the exported listing.
2) The highlight in the left column moves with the up and down arrow keys
but the detail display on the right does not update. It appears that only
a mouse click triggers an update.
3) When I pressed enter after moving the arrow keys in an attempt to
trigger an update of the details, the application took the unexpected step
of exiting.
Ideas for enhancement:
1) Category support.
2) Option to export to the clipboard so that one may do what one wishes
with the text without compromising security with an unencrypted disk file.
All in all, it is already a useful tool. Thank you again for making it
available.
Best regards,
Galen

Hello,
I added a simple export function to the keyring viewer for windows, that
will dump the entire content of a keyring database into a text file.
The keyring viewer is a simple gui tool for windows, that may be used
to decrypt and display the content of a keyring database file.
You may find the new version at
http://www.wundrak.de/keyring/index.html
Have fun,
Stefan

We would need to add a special exception as described under http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WritingFSWithNFLibs As this library cost nothing for both developer and end-user I don't have a problem to allow this. Martin Pool needs to agree with this license change, too. Jochen -- Jochen Hoenicke -- ICQ: 101057678 |

Hi everyone, I can see font selection is already 'on the wishlist', but would it be possible to implement FontBucket ( http://www.handshigh.com/fontbucket/ ) as the fonts package? Its royalty and price free, and I think it uses 100 or so k. How about it? This is even more problematic, as the sort routines would need the password to work. Of course sorting is only necessary when changing an entry, so the password should be known at this moment. But I'm not so sure if it is worth the trouble. > Q: Is there a limit on the quantity of entries that can be > stored? (I have at least about 50 planned entries for now, > but will certainly be increasing as months pass by.) The tested limit is 32000 records. Previous versions had a hardcoded limit of 2000 records, but I have removed it. It gets really slow with more than a few thousands records, but it should be fine with 100 records. Hello, I have just downloaded keyring, and I find it very useful. However, I have at least an average of two accounts on each machine I store on the password list. So, on name, I write the machine name, on account, the account name (root/fiol/maybe others). It would be really practical if the account name appeared on the main list. I know it may be a security concern. I agree that it should not be shown by default, but would it be OK to show it when it is not locked? It does not seem to me that it can be harmful, and it would really be very practical. Also, sorting the list by name + account would be nice, though not so necessary. Maybe if you > wanted to give users an option of selecting what cypher they like. > 3DES is considered by many to be the most secure algorithm, but you > might think of CAST for its speed while still being a 128bit > cypher. I plan to change the encryption to use the cfb or ofb variants. The problem of the current ecb method is that every 8 byte block of data is encrypted the same way if it contains the same data. So you can easily detect that two entries have the same account. The change to cfb/ofb is independent of the block cipher used; it applies to 3des as well as to blowfish, cast or aes. This changes the database format and thus needs an upgrade routine. I want to do this change together with other changes so that the database format hopefully needn't be changed again. > Does the change to the pilotSSLeay library mean that there will be > more ciphers to choose from, or is there a speed difference? I mainly did it for compatibility with PalmOS devices that don't support the (undocumented) builtin DES functions. The speed difference is a nice side effect, and with faster encryption algorithms it may be even better. Speed is important when changing the master password or searching the whole database with the new fulltext find method that is in 1.2-pre1. I may consider to give the user the choice to use a different encryption method (he only needs to install those shared libraries he actually uses). But I will only do that if this is feasible without making keyring too complex. Jochen -- Jochen Hoenicke -- ICQ: 101057678 |
