I’d like to build something current first. Give me a few more days and let me see what I can do. Matt, did you want me to update your uninstall or would you rather do it? We do provide an OS X download; the most recent version (5.2.15) is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.2/5.2.15/gutenprint-5.2.15.dmg/download. This is a conventional Mac OS X installer; it should not require extensive knowledge to install and set up a printer. We don't provide a Windows package (which requires a very different programming model); if someone wants to do the work involved, we would consider it. -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> *** MIT Engineers A Proud Tradition http://mitathletics.com *** Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- http://ProgFree.org Project lead for Gutenprint -- http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net "Linux doesn't dictate how I work, I dictate how Linux works." --Eric Crampton |

I found Gutenprint (Gimp-Print) because my MP450 printer driver is no longer compatible with OSX. On the face of it, it looks like Gutenprint would be a solution. However, perusing your user manual it quickly became clear that Gutenprint is designed for IT professionals, not an “educated layperson” such as myself, and requires a high level of computer programing competence just to get started. Do you have any plans to produce a version of Gutenprint that a moderately competent Mac or Windows user could install and configure and then use to print with? Ciao, Stephen J. Dear developer, I downloaded Gutenprint today and it solved a printing problem that I have had for years. I am now able to print some files that I could not print with the manufacturers driver, and everything is much faster as well. I wish I had known about Gutenprint earlier. I am very happy now and would like to express my gratitude. I could not find any information about where to make a small donation so I will instead sing your praise to anybody who will listen. I am also willing to give some free beer to any Gutenprint developer that happen to be in the neighborhood of Stockholm, Sweden! Peter. |

I have replaced the file with a new build. The long name you mention is because it is embedded in the configure script. I could hand edit it. Everything is there now I believe. I have the backend installed (gutenprint53+usb) and have fixed the generation of PPD's (-x). Here is the link to download the latest I have built. Dear Gutenprint-developers, first of all i want to thank you for your great work, which helps to decrease the number of thrown away printers, although they are actually still working fine ! I own a Lexmark X5490 driver, which is not supported anymore by Mac osx Mojave. Can you add a driver for this printer, too? Or are there technical reasons why this would not work and i have to buy a new printer? Thanks in advance and best regards Arthur Vetter |

Hi Vincent, Thanks for the report. As far as I know, there is no problem reported with this printer yet, but there are many possibilities: Which resolution mode are you using? And media is "plain"? Sorry I don't know the French equivalent, but it means normal paper, not photo paper or something like that. The plain media modes are defined in canon-modes.h as follows, with the third one being the default one: /* plain modes */ { 600, 600,CANON_INK_CcMmYK,"600x600dpi_high2",N_("600x600 DPI HIGH"),INKSET(9_C6M6Y6K9c6m6_c),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T|MODE_FLAG_PRO,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,4}, { 600, 600,CANON_INK_CMYK,"600x600dpi_high",N_("600x600 DPI MEDIUM"),INKSET(9_C6M6Y6K6_c),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,2}, /* untested */ { 600, 600,CANON_INK_CMYK,"600x600dpi",N_("600x600 DPI"),INKSET(9_C6M6Y6K6_c),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,1}, { 600, 600,CANON_INK_CMYK,"600x600dpi_draft",N_("600x600 DPI LOW"),INKSET(9_C2M2Y2K2),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T|MODE_FLAG_IP8500,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,1},/* untested */ { 600, 600,CANON_INK_CMYK,"600x600dpi_draft2",N_("600x600 DPI DRAFT"),INKSET(9_C2M2Y2K2),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T|MODE_FLAG_IP8500,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,0}, /* mono */ { 600, 600,CANON_INK_K,"600x600dpi_draftmono",N_("600x600 DPI MONO LOW"),INKSET(9_K2),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T|MODE_FLAG_IP8500,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,1},/* untested */ { 600, 600,CANON_INK_K,"600x600dpi_draftmono2",N_("600x600 DPI MONO DRAFT"),INKSET(9_K2),16,MODE_FLAG_EXTENDED_T|MODE_FLAG_IP8500,NULL,1.0,1.0,NULL,NULL,NULL,0}, Can you try the two mono modes please, and if those work, the colour modes from the bottom up in order. This testing will enable us to check if it is a problem with one or mode resolution modes, or a problem with the communication between printer and computer (a general problem).
