From: Czerno (aka Bertho Grandpied) To: freedos-users Cc: Eric Auer Hi Eric! On the freedos-kernel list, you voiced such opinion about the future of big sector disks: " that has low priority imho, as drives with large sectors are a temporary thing, will be gone with GPT partitions. " Commenting here, since I'm not suscribed to the kernel list (and won't be, /quia non sum dignus/ : I'm not worthy). That IMO is in error. What is a temporary thing is advanced format /with 512 byte sector emulation/ (AF-512e). 4K (and possibly larger, eventuallly) sectors are going to stay, what will be gone is the emulationion layer. Manufacturers have no interest to reverting to 512 bytes sectors - since 4K sects allows them to advertise higher capacities (albeit much of the additional space is lost slack at the user files level ...) Even more importantly, the move will help the Redmond giant ensure that /all/ non current versions of its W*** OS quicly become unusable for most people of the Earth. I don't foresee them missing the opportunity ;=) Regards -- Czerno |
